Two Dreams, One Day

What does one do when a dream comes true?  I suppose make another dream a reality.

For years I had dreamed and prayed for a teaching job somewhere over the ocean and this summer my dream came true.  After a 13 hour flight I arrived in Japan on a late Wednesday evening and headed to my new home south of Tokyo. Dream begun.  A new home, a new job and in a fabulous, new to me, country.

Now on to fulfilling another dream.  This one may seem silly to most but it is something I have wanted for years.  So as they say in the Army with boots on ground less then 24 hours I headed out to buy myself a bike.  Not just any bike but a Japanese cruiser.  Complete with basket, bell, and light.  It also came with a lock.

This blog is going to be about my life in Japan and my travels in the Far East. But when two dreams come true in 24 hours it needs to be shared.  I ride my bike all over my new home, which is what I have wanted to do for years.  All the while trying not to smile too much or I’ll become known as the crazy new teacher on the green bike.

My new favorite thing! I have always wanted a wicker basket, but the wire one is so big. It can hold my groceries and it has even got a 6 pack home for me.

The kickstand is great. It keeps the bike upright especially on a windy Japan day. The Japanese are very friendly people and thank goodness for that, because a kind man saw me struggling to keep my bike upright one day and taught me how to lock my kickstand.

The light and lock also came with the bike. The light runs on how fast I pedal.

The light and lock also came with the bike. The lock secures the back tire.

I added the pink cup holder. It was purchased at the 100 Yen store. Really it cost 105 Yen which at is about $1.32.

  1. Carmen,
So glad you are writing this so that we can share your life in Japan with you. LOVE the bike! I can just picture you riding around on it with a huge grin! Enjoy every moment!

  2. Can’t even begin to describe how jealous I am of you, Carmen. I’ve wanted to go to Japan almost my whole life, or even live there. Congratulations, and I hope you enjoy your stay there, however long that may be! :)

  3. I love your bike!! I am so happy that you are living your dream; it is definitely inspiring to me. Also, I read your car posting and I am totally with you on that subject. If I could subsist without the burden of a car, I would be much happier. I look forward to reading about your future adventures!!
